I have never had so many frustrations with a sound card ever. Getting a $60 Fiio DAC like the E07K and using through USB will give you waaaaaay better sound quality. The other problem is the "headphone amp" has a very average quality for the price.

Watching a 30min tv episode, the volume will go way up and way down by itself constantly. Stereo down mix through optical fluctuates in volume heavily.

This seems very dumb, maybe hooking my pc to a surround receiver isn't typical, but that's why I got this card. by disabling that and enabling the stereo downmix, you are essentially downmixing surround signals to stereo. Instead by default the optical only works when a surround signal is played. You can't just allow it to play surround sound sometimes, and stereo sometimes, etc like you would a home theater setup. I have it set to optical out, which you must set as a stereo downmix of everything playing through the computer.

Even saving a settings profile and reloading it doesn't bring back you settings exactly. It is very difficult to setup the way you want it, and once you do have it right, restarting the computer often changes your profiles around. First of all, the software that runs this card is awful.

Optical in/out and a physical headphone amp with front volume knob. I got this sound card specifically for two main reasons. Still, if you want a solid sound card for gaming I would recommend this one. I got it when it was on sale just after x-mas so it was a better deal then.

Overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase. I knew what I was buying (I do play games) but I was hoping it would surprise me on the music front. The four star rating might not be fair because this is advertised as a gaming sound card, which it performs very well at, but I had hoped for better reproduction for music. I'm using my Sol headphones (not the HD version). However, the overall tone and clarity when listening to music seems a little muffled to me. The popping and hiss is nearly eliminated. I almost returned this thinking I got a bad front panel.įinally, the reason I gave this version of the Recon3D only four stars is because it's great for gaming but only so so for listen to music. Took me a while to find this and only after I went to SB forums did I find the reason my mic wasn't working. If you want to use the front panel jack for your mic you need to go into the control panel for Sound Blaster and actually enable this function. One knob controls volume and the other (smaller) knob controls mic level input. There are two knobs on the front panel that can be pushed in making them flush with the panel. The front panel will automatically switch to headphone once you plug them in so the ability to switch to speakers without unplugging the headphones is very nice. There are three buttons that allow you to switch off THX as well as choose between speakers and headphones. I was pleasantly surprised when I found there were more to the front panel than just the obvious jacks for headphones, mic, and RCA out. Now almost any dedicated sound card is going to sound better than onboard sound, but I chose the Recon3D, and specifically this model, because of the front panel ports. I was getting tired of the popping and hiss I was getting from my onboard sound.
